Are you a nervous new dad, and have to have contact in a contact centre?

Sometimes, for whatever reason an absent new parent may have to have their first contacts with their new-born baby in a contact centre. You may not have any experience with parenting, as you and the mother are no longer in a relationship, so you have not had the opportunity to learn how to do certain things like the mother has, for example prepare a feed, feed a baby, or change a nappy; both can be very daunting even in less stressful situations. Remember the staff are not there to judge, the main thing is you report your concerns to a Social Worker and the staff, as they can help support you through the early days. Remember you need to prove that you are a good enough parent to eventually have unsupervised contact, so as long as you show willing to learn and are happy to attend any parenting classes as felt necessary, there really won’t be a problem as in time you will learn the skills needed to care for your child independently; and you in the long term will have proven that you want the best for your child.

However this support would not go on indefinitely and you would need to show that you can meet your child’s needs, by doing all that is necessary, you cannot sit back and watch and expect the staff to fulfil your child’s care needs. If you do this this may go against you in family court.
